Every morning, fish trawlers pull into the small coastal town of Ito. Fishing in japanese waters has been abundant over the last three years. Fish pictured here can be found a little time later at Tsujiki fishmarket in Tokyo. In Ito and around its waters the north and south of Japan converge and the different fish caught there show all the typical signs of the north and south. Where one fish of the same sort has a dotted line across its back, indicating the northern waters of Japan, other have a dashed line. Nakito, a former stewardess turned fish wholesaler, tells me, scientists are trying hard to unlock the riddle as to why so much fish is around. Seismic activity some other unusual natural occurence - they don't yet know. The fishermen however have the time of their lives. Trawlers pulling in bring as much as 16 tonnes of all kinds of different fish.
